Ain’t no denying it, I love food. I also love beauty. So if you’re anything like me beauties, then you are going to love my great eight beauty remedies using food.
Chances are that you have most of these items in your cabinet right now, so don’t be so quick to schedule your next spa appointment. Instead, quickly head to that home spa you didn’t even know you had–your kitchen.
1. Bask In The Bath All those baths from childhood have been replaced with showers. I am bringing bath time back and you should too beauties. These two foodie baths are my faves:
Chocolate Milk Bath The milk powder in this recipe will nourish your skin, plus milk contains lactic acid that exfoliates and softens the skin. Then once you add the cocoa power you also add a boost of antioxidants to help repair your skin. Ooohlala chocolate milk goodness coming right up.
How to make it? Mix 1/2 cup of powdered milk, 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of cornstarch. Then add this mixture to warm bath water. Be sure to swirl it around so it mixes well. Now dive in and relax.
Om With Oatmeal Itchy dry skin in the winter is so not
RAD, but since my eczema is the worst this time of the year I take my breakfast staple of oatmeal and bathe in it once a week. Oatmeal is excellent for your skin, smells good, and leaves your skin feeling crazy soft so indulge in this bath of glory too boo.
How to make it? Grind one cup of plain oats on the highest setting of your blender, processor, or grinder. Run a tub of warm water then sprinkle the oats over the bottom of the tub. Stir to break up any clumps, soak for 15-20 minutes and when you get out air or pat dry to ensure the moisture is locked in.
2. Feed Your Face I have crazy sensitive skin, so sometimes getting a facial with today’s latest power ingredients causes more harm than good. So when my beauty rest escapes me, I whip together the following facial, chase it with a tea bag eye treatment and stash the cash from my otherwise unpredictable spa experience.
Pomegranate Scrub These tart crunchy seeds are loaded with anti-aging compounds, like antioxidants and vitamin C so when you make them into a scrub this power food has the power to remove dead skin cells and reveal that smooth soft skin you had as a little girl.
How to make it? In a food processor, combine two tablespoons of pomegranate seeds and one cup of uncooked oatmeal. Transfer to a bowl, then stir in two tablespoons of honey and two tablespoons of buttermilk. Apply to your pretty face for a few minutes, then rinse. Sweeten the deal and add a little sugar for some gentle exfoliation action.
Tea Time v. Bedtime Don’t sleep on those used tea bags beauties. They can quickly and visibly reduce dark circles and diminish puffiness. You may notice that most eye treatments contain caffeine, which can help shrink blood vessels around your eye. However tea bags not only have caffeine they also have beneficial antioxidants and tannins, and this super ingredient stimulates healthy blood circulation and helps both tighten and soothe your skin. So first sip and then dip your favorite teas bags on top of your lovely lids ladies.
How to make it? Steep two bags of your favorite tea. Remove the bags, place them on a plate and then pop them into the fridge. Let them chill for 15-20 minutes. Next, I recommend you chill too – as in
drink that tea you just made. Then when it’s time take the tea bags out. Gently squeeze out any excess liquid until the bags are damp, lay down, put the tea bags over your eyes and leave them on for 15-30 minutes.
3. Repair Your Hair Curly hair be so frizzy though! Well not after you try these two treatments. One is great for frizz control and the other is a deep conditioner from heaven. Try them both and get ready to rock out with your curls out natural hair sistas!
Frizz Control For Hair Gone Bananas Take control of those dry strands with this nourishing hair calmer. Bananas are full of potassium, and avocados are packed with moisturizing fatty acids, and together these two things are guaranteed to soften your hair instantly. Trust me, the results will be bananas!
How to make it? Mash one banana and half an avocado together. Then comb the mixture through your dry hair, not wet hair. Dry hair absorbs more nutrients than wet so don’t reinvent this step. Next, cover hair with a plastic cap and leave it on for 10 minutes. Then rinse your hair with clean with cool water for a new tamed mane.
Honey This Deep Conditioner Tho When it comes to deep conditioning your hair the process ain’t that deep. In fact this two minute recipe is going to have you in shock once you see the results. A natural humectant, honey attracts moisture. It’s also full of antioxidants and nutrients to feed hair follicles that house the live part of hair, encouraging hair growth. So Honey let’s do this.
How to make it? First, mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 1 tablespoon of olive oil (can double this if you have a lot of hair). Heat this mixture up in the microwave to melt. Then apply the mixture to either wet or dry hair (I say wet), cover your head with a warm towel for 30 minutes, then shampoo as usual. Rinse both your shampoo and honey/oil mixture out at the same time.
4. Master Your Mani/Pedi Can’t make it to the salon? No problem, try these at home treatments for both your nails and toenails.
Treat Your Feet Cornmeal and bananas should roll together more often. As a foot scrub they are perfect since the cornmeal exfoliates roughness and has anti-fungal properties, while the banana softens skin.
How to make it? Stir two tablespoons of cornmeal with 1 tablespoon of mashed bananas together until they are evenly blended. Then once the mix has the consistency of wet sand, massage the paste all over your feet. Don’t forget to work it into calluses for about 30 seconds (or until skin feels smooth).
Calm Your Cuticles Baking soda has many super powers, however the work it does on my hands is hands down my fave.
How to make it? Make a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Then rub it gently in circular motion over your hands and fingers to exfoliate and smooth. After a minute or so rinse clean with warm water. Apply polish as usual.
