Raf Simons’ Christian Dior Spring 2015 Couture Collection was anything but predictable. Yes, the typical inspirations of a floral spring awakening were at play, but Simons took a very different lens with his bold interpretations of this season’s looks. His pieces took us on a journey of a rather rainy spring — with waterproof clear coats, cleverly printed with flowers through to long-sleeved graphic blazen bodysuits with matching shiny boots.
Mini dresses hit way above the knee, embellished in multi-color sequins that sparkled the way pebbles can after rainfall. A short coat in rich green revealed sides of silver petals and a yellow collared dress had similar silver detailing. Full pleated skirts in another waterproof material boasted varied horizontal fabric stripes. There was this theme of soft material woven into a hard or metallic component that continued throughout the collection, including these delightful ball gowns whose skirts hung together by multiple silver oval rings.
But the glamour didn’t stop there. Simons had pieces for women fully confident in their sexy and featured sharp cutouts in A-line dresses, tight over-the-knee footwear, and skin-hugging ensembles in silver and gold glitter stripes. The bodysuits came in the fully-sleeved and sleeveless varieties — in psychedelic swirls, geometric shapes, and vertical stripes.
What this collection showed was considerably strong layering of distinctive materials; even though the floral influence was present, the blend of unique styles Simons put forth— from watercolor and sequined to graphic print and lace cutout — was a re-imagination of flowers in springtime. But wouldn’t it be nice to see just once a Spring Couture collection with no flowers?
