It's no secret that I am obsessed with the 60's. I love the color, the style and the music! It was an era of discovery and creation, but one thing I always forget, is just how insane the men dressed. It's hard to imagine a decade where it was acceptable for men to dress like this.
It's also no secret that I don't have great time for menswear, something I am hoping to fix with a guest writer or two in the next few months, but I LOVE the color and vibrancy of the 60's men. Inspired by art, India and spirituality - and a massive case of acid - they dressed in the maddest of clothes and color. I find mens clothing today so dull and uninspiring. As most guys (I said most, not all though) settle for jeans and a T-shirt. Falling into the if it fits and I need it buying mantra.
I guess you could say that the 60's also saw the rise in the celebrity couple as well. There had been Hollywood couple before, but never the same level of intrusion into their lives. I mean the press HOUNDED the Beatles and then their girlfriends, given that youth culture was taking over the country, it helped that the guys were very much into their models, creating beautiful fashionable photographs which in turn pushed newspaper/magazine sales. I mean George Harrison and Patti Boyd? Rides! Both of them! Rides!
The youth culture thing is something we haven't recovered from really, but then this is not another post of ranting about my views on d'media, its a celebration of 60's menswear! Huzzah! I feel another mens fashion inspiration blog post coming on!! Funnily enough, the one post I did do on menswear, was one of my most read blog posts ever! Weird!
(side note - I am fairly convinced that that union jack jacket inspired a Topshop collection a few years back, I think it might have been 2007, but I have the scarf from the collection and there was an IDENTICAL jacket as well. Does anyone have the jacket? Can you send in a pic? )
