Miss World 2009, the 59th edition of the Miss World pageant was held on December 12 at the Gallagher Convention Center in Johannesburg, South Africa. 112 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown, the biggest turnout in the history of the pageant. Kaiane Aldorino from Gibraltar won the crown at a glittering ceremony. The runner up was Miss Mexico who many thought should have won that night. The local candidate from South Africa came 3rd with France (4th), Canada (5th), Panama (6th) and Colombia (7th) completed the finalists. Among the Semi Finalists were the girls from Brazil, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Martinique, Poland, Sierra Leone and Vietnam.
Aldorino has previously won the Beach Beauty award for having the best body, Japan made it into the Semi Finalists winning the Miss Sports, Mexico won the approval of the judges in the Top Model competition, Canada won Miss Talent and India the Beauty With a Purpose award.
Wearing her crown of tiny jeweled blue flowers, Aldorino said had been impressed with South Africa, which was hosting its seventh Miss World final and that year was also the host country for the FIFA World Cup. In March 2014 she was appointed deputy of the Mayor of Gibraltar.

The national director of Mexico former Miss Universe Lupita Jones was hysterical about her candidate becoming 1st runner up.
Aldorino was received with a great homecoming celebration in her native Gibraltar. This is the biggest title Gibraltar has ever won in a pageant until this date.
Miss France and Miss South Africa were former Miss Universe candidates they placed 6th and 7th during that pageant.
Although the Caribbean island of Martinique made it into the Semi Finals and Barbados did not, this last one was proclaimed the queen of that region.
