Uneven but generally creditable sophomore feature for Philip Kaufman, possibly the best and certainly the most neglected of the Movie Brat directors, armed with a dark, critical rigour to his social and historical musings. Excellent performances from Cliff Robertson and Robert Duvall. Pity about the silly music score by Dave Grusin and ludicrous, repetitious cutaways to the Pinkertons pursuing the James and Younger boys. Lovely atmosphere conjured by DOP Bruce Surtees.
